Vinton Construction Co.
STH 42, Village of Sister Bay
This project defined what teamwork is all about. Rarely do construction projects come along where everyone is on board, egos aside, working toward a common goal of completing construction. The synergy among WisDOT, REI Engineering, Village leaders, and the business community led to a successful project that limited disruption.
This 2-lane state highway also includes parallel parking spaces and sidewalks along each side, carrying as many as 100,000 vehicles per week during the tourist season. The construction had to be done in tight areas, and Vinton continually looked for ways to efficiently complete the work. Working with the Village of Sister Bay, they submitted a CRI to alter timing, close streets, and use detour routes to best accommodate their work flow while minimizing public inconvenience. Perhaps the most complex aspect was working in the peak tourism season, where they were not permitted to begin work before 7 a.m. on Mondays and then had to pave all open trenches and open STH 42 before noon every Friday.
Still, the work was completed a remarkable 163 days ahead of schedule.
Mitch Larson, owner of On-Deck Clothing, emailed to say “Vinton is amazing!! I have never witnessed such a coordinated team. These guys rock.”
